You can get chickens for your chicken tractor by a few methods.
1. Buy chicks from the local feed store (about $1.50-$3.00 each) in the spring
2. Buy chicks from a hatchery by mail
(cheaper and more variety, but you will have to buy 25)
3. Buy chicks or chickens from a neighbor or friend who already has them.
4. Buy Chickens from a local 4-H or FFA student. Check your local fair.
5. Buy eggs and an incubator and hatch your own!
Raising chicks is easy. You will need a few items listed on our equipment page.
1. Get some chicks
2. Buy the plan and build your Super Chicken Tractor.
3. Clear a spot in your garage and fill the Super Chicken Tractor house with
2" of wood chips.
4. Clamp a 250 watt heat lamp to the rafter of the Super Chicken Tractor
house.
5. Get a 25lb bag of medicated chick starter and fill a quart feeder with it
6. Get a quart waterer and fill it with clean water
7. Put the chicks in the house and make sure they have the heat lamp on 24
hours a day.
8. Make sure your chicks have clean water, feed, and wood chips every day.
9. Do this until they have a full set of feathers, then move the Super Chicken
Tractor outside
What to Feed Your Chickens
Feed your chickens a good layer pellet or crumble after they are old enough. They will consume about 1/2 pound per bird per day. We like Layena Pellets or Layena Crumbles.
Do I Need a Rooster to Get Eggs?
No, you don't need a rooster. Without a rooster, your chickens will still lay 3-5 eggs per week, but they will be unfertilized. Chances are, there was no rooster involved in the last egg you ate!
