The chicken, in our opinion, is the most amazing animal in the world. Some paleoentologists believe it is a direct decendent of the dinosaurs, which means that it has 65 million years of genetic adaptation on its side. If you can keep a cat or dog, you can keep a chicken. Chickens eat almost anything including snow. They can last for days on an empty stomach (although we wouldn't recommend it). They are disease resistant, and are susceptible to a lot fewer parasites than other common pets.
The chicken is unbelievably GREEN! It is omnivorous and will eat almost anything. Your chickens will turn your leftovers into eggs. You can feed them anything you would eat (we don't feed ours chicken products, even though they will eat it).

Chickens are an amazing amount of fun for every generation. When we started our first project in town, several neighbors were skeptical at first. However, once the chickens were living in our back yard, all of the kids and grandkids of our neighbors would always ask to "come over and see the chickens" when they visited grandma and grandpa! When given the attention you would give a dog or cat, the hens always become very gentle and want you to scratch their backs when you gather eggs. Chickens are social animals with a distict and interesting social structure. Some scientists claim they can show many emotions (and we believe them!).

Believe it or not, chickens are LEGAL ALMOST ANYWHERE! Some people will try to get you to think that chickens are illegal in your neighborhood, but most places allow chickens as pets as long as you don't keep a rooster. However, some neighborhood associations have covenants that do not allow chickens. We can't believe it. Chickens are less noisy, less dangerous, and less messy than most dogs......so why not get some in your neighborhood!

The average well cared for chicken will produce about 3-5 natural, hormone free, antibiotic free eggs per week. That means that your flock of three chickens will give you about a carton of eggs every week. If you have extras, you can make your neighbors happy or teach your kids the value of a profitable mini chicken-egg enterprise!
